Something From Nothing - Fall Afternoons 2025
Saturday Afternoons, October 11 - November 15, 2025 | 2:00 PM - 5:30 PM
This expansive, six-part course and lab for beginners will teach you how to turn that desire to build something into a finished piece. We’ll cover shop fundamentals, basic joinery, and more as we help you plan a project, get acquainted with the shop, and start your woodworking journey. Each student will choose a project to work on, and we’ll provide tailored guidance. Keep in mind that larger projects require significantly more time than the allotted class time. The course fee includes a one-year Shop Access Membership, allowing participants to book time in the shop following course completion.
Class 1: Measure Twice, Cut Once (10/11) - Measuring, layout, and marking; cutting, milling, and drilling; cutting selection, and cutting speeds.
Class 2: This To That (10/18) - Joinery, adhesives, fasteners, and how to choose from everything at your disposal.
Class 3: Project Planning (10/25) - Putting It All Together: Research, technical design, finding drawings, making drawings/sketching, budgeting, materials, and hardware costs; time - prep time, shopping, build time, drying time, steps and linear time, multitasking, workflow, and shop hours.
Class 4: Just A Little Off The Top (11/1) - Sanding, planing, shaping, surface preparation, and fixing mistakes.
Labs 5 & 6: Stepping Out (11/8 & 11/15) - Next steps: paint, sealers, oils, waxes, and other finishes; shop time to build projects.
Please note that the class fee does not include project materials. There may be some scrap lumber available for use, but attendees should plan to source the bulk of their materials. We can offer guidance on where to purchase and can help coordinate delivery.
Instructors: Brian Schildhorn
Shop Safety: PPE will be provided, but please note that closed-toe shoes are required in the shop.
Refund Policy: 5-day minimum notice for a full refund.
